5 Costly Mistakes Tourists Make When Planning a Kashmir Winter Trip (And How to Avoid Them)

1. Booking a Hotel Without Central Heating

This is the number one mistake travelers make. Many standard hotels in Kashmir advertise “heaters,” which usually means a basic electric blower or a halogen lamp. During Chillai Kalan (the harshest 40 days of winter spanning late December to January), power cuts are frequent, and small blowers are completely useless against sub-zero temperatures.

The Fix: You must explicitly ask if the hotel has 24/7 central radiator heating and heavy-duty power backups. If you want to sleep comfortably in a t-shirt while it snows outside, do not compromise on this.

2. Relying on Standard Taxis for Mountain Roads

The drive from Srinagar up to high-altitude destinations like Gulmarg or Sonamarg is stunning, but the roads are often covered in black ice. Tourists frequently hire standard 2WD taxis from the airport to save money, only to get stuck halfway up a mountain pass when a snowstorm hits.

The Fix: For winter transit outside Srinagar, you absolutely need a 4×4 vehicle equipped with anti-skid snow chains. If you book through a local agency, they handle this vehicle switch seamlessly at Tangmarg (the base of Gulmarg).

3. Showing Up in Gulmarg Without Pre-Booking

Gulmarg is the crown jewel of Kashmir’s winter tourism, boasting the highest gondola in Asia and some of the best powder skiing in the world. Unfortunately, tourists often arrive assuming they can just buy a Gondola ticket or rent ski gear on the spot. By January, everything is sold out weeks in advance, leaving unprepared travelers standing in the snow with nothing to do.

The Fix: Lock in your Gondola passes and ski instructors at least a month before you arrive. If you want to hit the slopes, read up on the logistics in a dedicated Gulmarg skiing guide so you know exactly what gear to rent and which slope (Phase 1 vs. Phase 2) matches your skill level.

4. Packing the Wrong Type of Winter Gear

Denim jeans and regular sneakers will ruin your trip. Denim freezes and stiffens in the snow, and regular shoes have zero grip on slippery, iced-over pathways.

The Fix: Focus on the three-layer rule: thermal inner-wear, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Bring waterproof trekking boots with heavy treads. Once you arrive in Srinagar, do as the locals do and buy a Pheran—a traditional, thick woolen cloak that is incredibly warm and perfect for walking around the city.

5. Trying to DIY a Peak Winter Itinerary

Backpacking and DIY travel are great for the summer, but winter in the Himalayas is highly unpredictable. Heavy snowfall can close roads for days, flights get delayed by fog, and tourist zones get crowded. Trying to manage hotel cancellations, transport swaps, and activity bookings on a frozen smartphone is a nightmare.

The Fix: This is the one season where relying on local expertise is mandatory. Booking curated Kashmir winter tour packages through an agency on the ground ensures that if a road closes or a storm hits, someone else is handling the logistics, rerouting your trip, and keeping you safe.
