Flying on a budget

I’m keen to visit other countries, but the prices of flights are holding me back.  Airlines seem to charge for every little thing today, and there are tons of gotchas in their terms and conditions.  The seats have gotten smaller and so has the leg room.  I’m not sure that it’s worth it.  Do any airlines offer a good value for the ticket price and decent customer service?  If most airlines offer the same poor value, then I’ll definitely want to fly as cheaply as possible.  What are your top tips for flying on a budget?

It’s because of all those drawbacks you mentioned that I usually fly first or business class. At least with that, I know I’m getting great customer service and no extra charges for things like baggage and a decent meal. By the time I factor in the headache and discomfort of economy, it’s well worth the price.

That said, I know there are websites out there that offer last minute flights at a discounted cost. If you’re able to be spontaneous, you might end up saving a bundle.
