Planning a wedding is hard enough, but a honeymoon on top of that? The stress over the itinerary, travel, and the cost of the whole thing is enough to make anyone consider a premature divorce.
But there’s something about a Caribbean honeymoon. The turquoise water, pale beaches, warm breezes, and perfect sunsets evoke a level of natural romance that reflects the emotional catharsis most couples want to feel on their first escape as a married couple.
Planning such a honeymoon, however, is a tad more complicated than throwing a dart at a map and then googling the best beaches in the area. But if you do it right, you can put together the perfect opening chapter for married life.
Choose Your Island
In spite of what some might think, there is no ‘default’ location in the Caribbean. Each island is extremely distinct and is characterised by its own cultural history and local perspective. Some are more exciting and fast-paced, while others are more laid back. If you want a vibrant culture, where music-filled evenings run late into the night, then Jamaica might be the pick for you.
St Lucia, on the other hand, contrasts exciting volcanic views with quiet, relaxing luxury, and the Bahamas offer perfect, white-on-turquoise beaches in spades. The most important thing is to figure out which one suits you the most as a couple. What do you want from your trip? Are you craving attractions, culture, and history? Or would you prefer to do as little as humanly possible and be doted on, hand and foot?
Time It Right
The good news is that, because the Caribbean is located slap bang in the middle of the equator, the islands generally enjoy warm weather all year round. The bad news is that, for some months, there tend to be tropical storms and the odd hurricane, so timing your honeymoon there is important.
Peak season is usually from December to April – then, the weather tends to be dry and warm, with gentle breezes. But, with this being peak season, it’s much busier and prices are higher, so just bear that in mind.
Hurricane season is usually from June to November, with the odd exception here and there. I would recommend taking a look at forecasts well in advance just to be sure you won’t encounter any extreme weather.
The sweet spot is probably around May time, when the weather is perfect, but there are fewer crowds overall, and prices are more affordable.
Where to Stay?
Do you want to stay in an all-inclusive hotel? A luxury hotel? Or perhaps you would enjoy the privacy of a private villa. All options and more are available on almost every Caribbean island. Just make sure it aligns properly with your budget, especially when factoring in the spending of money you might need, for instance, if you are at a villa and eat out at restaurants almost every night, unlike at an all-inclusive.
Book the Travel Well in Advance
This almost goes without saying, but you want to give yourself the luxury of feeling as little stress as possible during your journey. That doesn’t just mean booking flights months in advance, that means making sure passports are up to date, insurance is sorted, and that you can find a car park in London that’s near the airport that won’t rob you blind.
The Perfect Honeymoon
Planning a honeymoon is all about balancing imagination with harsh reality. You want to follow your heart, but to do so, you need to take an honest look at all of the logistics involved. But when you’re honeymooning in the Caribbean, it’s well worth the work!
